What is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness in the United States.

It is estimated that 50% of people with glaucoma go undiagnosed. But loss of vision from glaucoma can be prevented if you get treatment early enough.

Glaucoma is a disease that causes gradual damage to the optic nerve.

This nerve acts like an electric cable containing a huge number of wires.

It is responsible for carrying images from the eyes to the brain. Damage to the nerve fibers causes blind spots to develop. Glaucoma is also known as the "silent blinder". Often most people don’t notice these blind areas until much of the optic nerve has been damaged. If the entire nerve is destroyed, blindness results. There is no cure for glaucoma, however, if diagnosed at early stages, medication and surgery can slow or prevent further vision loss. High pressure alone does not mean that you have glaucoma. You may have a normal level of pressure but other factors may contribute to your risk of developing the disease. The most important risk factors include:

  • Diabetes
  • Anyone over the age of 40
  • Near-sightedness
  • Family history of glaucoma
  • Previous eye injury
  • African American
